Battleships, Mermaids and AGLCA Rendezvous in Norfolk, Virginia

War Ships

May 4-9
We traveled about 12 miles to Norfolk to stay at the Waterside Marina to attend the AGLCA Spring Rendezvous.  We met so many Loopers in progress, many who have finished the Loop and many who in the planning stage.  We immersed ourselves in learning all we could about how, when, and where we will be going for the next segment of the trip.  We attended many seminars, lunches and dinners with everyone involved.  We got suggestions on where to visit in the Chesapeake Bay, New York, Canada and the Great Lakes, and many more places!   We learned how to handle going through locks.  We will go through about 200 locks!  We got tips on how to plan for the waterways,  canals,  the Georgian Bay and the rivers.  Karl and I also took a US Power Squadron course on boat safety.  It was helpful to review basic boating skills.  We can always learn from any course we take!
Mermaids are the theme of Norfolk

We enjoyed visiting Norfork.   It is the largest Naval Station in the world!  We saw so many battleships, aircraft carriers and container ships, many miles of ships all lined up.  It was a little intimidating at first, but then Karl said it made him feel safer to be in America!  It has an amazing waterfront where so many people are out enjoying the sunshine and beauty of the area.  On Saturday, Joe and Barbara hosted a Derby Party.  They are from Lexington, Ky, so they knew how to host a party with traditional Derby foods including burgoo, hot browns and delicious Kentucky Derby pie!
