Cape May, New Jersey

Sunrise

5/30
We woke up to a perfect day!  We traveled about 53 miles in the Delaware Bay to Cape May, New Jersey and stayed at the South Jersey Marina.  The winds were calm and the waves were less than one foot! I did not realize how huge this bay is, there are times when you could not see land.  I understand now why the books cautioned mariners to be mindful of the weather and to respect this bay!  The current is strong, about 3 knots and this is a busy shipping waterway!  We saw many barges and large ships.  The same "rules" apply about the weather conditions in this bay as well as the Chesapeake.  Only leave the docks when the predicted winds are less than 10 to 15 and seas less than 2 feet!
We were so lucky to have this great weather window.  We had a very enjoyable ride to Cape May.

  1. Karl/Mackie,

We were in Cape May ourselves on 5/31 to 6/5!! Just missed you by a half a day. We were in that very Salt Water Taffy joint on Saturday! Our friends live in Villas, NJ, about 3 miles up the Delaware Bay coastline from where the Cape May Ferry Landing operates. Looks like your trip is going very well, and we wish you continued good sailing. Rd snapper season opens on Tuesday!!
