Walking Tour of Beaufort Historic District |
April 2
Karl and I enjoyed a free walking tour yesterday afternoon. Our guide, Davis Folsom was excellent and full of local historical knowledge and entertaining stories to make it interesting! I highly recommend the tour. We walked around the historic district where he pointed out large antebellum homes, churches and buildings which were built in the 1840's and 50's. Many were turned into hospitals and military bases during the Revolutionary war. Beaufort was occupied by Union troops during the war, so it was spared from destruction after the war. It did see some battles, though! The homes are still standing and many have been turned into Bed and Breakfast Inns.
The Big Chill House |
901 Prince Street Beaufort, South Carolina John and Nelle Smith lived in this beautiful home in the Historic District |
Beaufort is also a place where many well known movies were filmed. The Great Santini, The Prince of Tides and Forrest Gump were filmed here among many others. Our guide was kind enough to drive Karl and me to see The Big Chill House, since we asked about it and we did not have a car.
Mackie with Nelle and Ora Smith |
We ate a delicious dinner at The Fish Camp Restaurant with my Aunt Nelle and my cousin, Ora. They live in Beaufort. After a tour of our boat, we drove over to Port Royal for dinner. The food was outstanding and we had so much fun catching up.
